You’ll love the peaceful atmosphere surrounded by lush pine forests and dramatic limestone cliffs. It’s the perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling in the calm waters. The shore is quite deep so there’s lots of space to spread out and find a cozy area for yourself. 

The famous Camí de Cavalls trail runs through this beach so don’t forget to explore the hiking trails along the cliffs. They offer amazing views of the bay that you won’t want to miss.

To get here, you can take a bus from Mahon or Ciutadella to nearby Cala Galdana, then enjoy a short walk through the woods. The journey is part of the adventure! You can also drive to the beach and there’s parking available (10 to 15 minute-walk to/fro).

For a unique experience, consider visiting Cala Mitjana by boat. It’s a great way to see the beach from a different perspective and explore nearby coves. You can also join a horseriding excursion to explore the area.

2. Playa de Son Bou

If you’ve seen postcards of Menorca, chances are you’ve seen Cala Macarelleta.

This beach is very popular, especially in the summer… but when you visit, you’ll understand why. I completely fell in love with Cala Macarelleta’s stunning beauty. This small, pristine beach is a true gem on Menorca’s southern coast.

Surrounded by pine trees and limestone cliffs, this cove feels like a hidden secret. The sand here is soft and white, perfect for sunbathing. The water is crystal-clear and turquoise, inviting you to take a refreshing swim.

To get there, I recommend taking the coastal walk from Cala Macarella which is part of Camí de Cavalls. It’s an easy, beautiful walk and you get the full effect of this cove’s beauty as you approach it from the cliffside. 

Remember, Cala Macarelleta is a virgin beach. This means it’s undeveloped and natural. There are no facilities, so bring water and snacks.

Cala Macarelleta tends to get busy in peak season so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot on the sand and enjoy the atmosphere before it gets too crowded. 

Don’t forget your camera! The views of the turquoise water against the white sand are picture-perfect.

4. Cala Turqueta

Best For: Those seeking a serene escape with stunning turquoise waters and a picturesque, unspoiled environment

Remember to bring water and snacks, if you’re spending the day here. There is a small chiringuito in the parking lot with food & drinks and toilets. 

5. Cala Pilar

To reach this secluded paradise, you’ll need to embark on a 30 to 40-minute walk from the parking area (this trail is part of the Cami de Cavalls). The path can be rocky, so wear sturdy shoes. Your effort will be well worth it when you see the stunning scenery.

Cala del Pilar boasts unique red rock cliffs that frame a wide, sandy beach. The contrast between the red rocks and the turquoise water creates a breathtaking view.

The beach’s remote location means you’ll often have plenty of space to yourself. It’s perfect for those seeking tranquility away from crowded tourist spots. Swimming and sunbathing are the main activities here. 

Cala Pilar is a protected fishing area which makes it great for snorkeling. The clear waters are inviting, and you won’t find seaweed or jellyfish most of the time. You’ll need to bring your own gear.

Remember to bring water and snacks (maybe even a beach umbrella to provide shade), as there are no facilities on this unspoiled beach. Pack everything you need for a day of relaxation in nature’s embrace.

6. Cala Pregonda

You’ll need to put in some effort to reach this secluded spot. The beach is accessible by a 30-minute walk from Platja Binimel·là parking lot. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water for this moderately strenuous hike along the famous Cami de Cavalls.

Want to save your energy? Then seeing Cala Pregonda by catamaran is the way to go. 

Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views. The beach is surrounded by rocky outcrops and small islands, creating a picturesque setting.

Cala Pregonda is perfect for swimming and snorkeling,thanks to its calm, shallow waters. You can also try cliff jumping if you’re feeling adventurous. There’s also a natural pool here, Escull de Pregonda.

Pack a picnic and spend the day relaxing on the soft sand. There are no facilities here, so bring everything you need. The unspoiled nature of this beach is part of its charm.

For the best experience, try to visit early in the morning or late afternoon. This way, you’ll avoid the midday heat and have more of the beach to yourself.

7. Cala en Porter

Best For: Families and those seeking a vibrant beach atmosphere with convenient amenities and nearby entertainment options

Sitting between two tall cliffs, giving it a sheltered and cozy feel, lies Cala en Porter, a semi-urban beach in the south of Menorca.

You’ll love how easy it is to get to this beach. It’s right next to a village of the same name, so you can park and get there in less than 5 minutes. There are also plenty of facilities nearby, like restaurants and shops.

While Cala en Porter doesn’t have any unique features, it’s still lovely for a day out especially if you’re traveling as a family.  The sand is soft and fine, perfect for sunbathing or building sandcastles. The water is a stunning turquoise color and the calm waters and gentle slope into the sea make it great for swimming and snorkeling.

For a fun adventure, take a short kayaking trip to explore the nearby caves. Or, if you’re feeling energetic, try paddle surfing. 

A visit to this Menorca beach should be paired with a visit to the popular Cova d’en Xoroi, a bar that’s built into the cliffs.

Remember to bring your camera – the sunset views here are breathtaking. You’ll want to capture the golden light reflecting off the cliffs and sea. Head to the viewpoint above the beach for the best panoramic views.

Car Rentals in Menorca

Renting a car is a popular choice for getting around Menorca. While public transportation in Menorca is decent (especially during peak season when services are scaled up to meet the higher demand), based on my personal experience, having a car will give you the ultimate flexibility to explore at will. 

Here are my best tips for renting a car in Menorca:

• Book in advance, especially during peak season (July-August)
• Choose a small car for easier parking and navigation on narrow roads
• Most rentals are manual transmission, so request automatic if needed
• Many beaches have parking lots nearby, but arrive early to secure a spot
• Always carry cash for parking fees at some beaches
• Remember to drive on the right side of the road and follow local traffic rules

Public Transportation in Menorca

If you prefer not to drive, Menorca has a reliable bus network. 

Here’s what you need to know:

• There are buses connecting major towns and popular beaches
• Schedules are more frequent during summer months
• Buy tickets on the bus or at main stations
• Consider a multi-day pass for savings on multiple trips
• Some remote beaches may not have direct bus service
• Factor in longer travel times to get to different places

TMSA is the bus company in Menorca and I highly recommend checking out the bus routes and schedules in advance when you’re planning your Menorca trip. Their website is https://www.tmsa.es/en. 

Taxis are also available but can be expensive for long trips. For visiting hidden coves, you might need to combine bus rides with short walks or boat trips.

Best Time to Visit Menorca’s Beaches

Menorca’s beaches shine brightest from late spring to early fall. The island’s Mediterranean climate offers warm days and pleasant waters for swimming and sunbathing.

You’ll find the best beach weather in Menorca from May to October. Temperatures hover around 25°C (77°F) in summer, perfect for lounging on powdery white sand. Water temperatures peak in August, reaching a balmy 25°C.

Spring brings mild weather and blooming wildflowers. It’s great for beach walks and photography. Fall offers warm seas and fewer crowds.

Winter can be chilly and rainy. Many beach facilities close during this time. When I visited Menorca in early March, the beaches were mostly empty but we still thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere!

Peak Tourist Season in Menorca

July and August mark the busiest months on Menorca’s beaches. You’ll find lively atmospheres at popular spots like Cala Galdana and Son Bou. These beaches buzz with activities and watersports.

For a quieter experience, visit in June or September. You’ll still enjoy warm weather and open facilities. But you’ll have more space to spread out on the sand.

Some beaches, like secluded Cala Mitjaneta, stay peaceful even in peak season. They’re perfect if you want to escape the crowds.
