Ciutadella de Menorca’s charming old town is a treasure trove of history waiting to be discovered. I was so taken by its narrow, winding streets that made me feel like I had stepped back in time! Just strolling around the town, enjoying the atmosphere, was a pleasure.
On your visit to Ciutadella, start your journey at Plaza d’es Born, the city’s main square. This bustling hub is surrounded by impressive buildings and makes a great starting point for your exploration.
Don’t miss the stunning Cathedral of Santa Maria de Ciutadella. Its Gothic and Baroque architecture is a sight to behold. Step inside to admire the intricate details and peaceful atmosphere.
As you stroll, keep an eye out for the beautiful palaces that dot the old town. Many of these grand buildings date back centuries and showcase different architectural styles.
The Episcopal Palace is another must-see. Its magnificent cloister offers a moment of tranquility amidst your urban adventure.
Take time to explore the quaint shops and cafes tucked away in the historic streets. You might find unique souvenirs or a cozy spot for a coffee break.
Remember to look up as you walk. The balconies and facades of the buildings tell their own stories of Ciutadella’s rich past.
2. Relax on Menorca’s Stunning Beaches
What kind of Spanish island holiday would it be without going to the beach?
I’m not kidding when I say that Menorca’s beaches are a true paradise for sun-seekers and water lovers. You’ll find over 100 beaches on this small island, each with its own unique charm.
Head to Cala Macarella for crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft white sand. It’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. For a more secluded experience, walk to nearby Cala Macarelleta (my personal fave!), a smaller cove with equally stunning views.
If you’re looking for amenities, try Son Bou. It’s Menorca’s longest beach, stretching for nearly 3 kilometers. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, shops, and water sports rentals here.
For a unique experience, visit Cala en Brut. It’s not a sandy beach, but a rocky inlet with transparent water. It’s great for cliff jumping and snorkeling.
Cala Galdana is ideal for families. Its calm, shallow waters make it safe for children to swim. There are also plenty of facilities nearby.
For a wilder, more natural setting, head to Cavalleria Beach on the north coast. Its reddish sand and rugged cliffs offer a striking landscape.
Remember to bring sun protection, water, and snacks. Many beaches have limited facilities, so come prepared. If you’re visiting during the summer months, early mornings or late afternoons are best to avoid crowds and intense midday sun.

3. Stroll around Mahón, Menorca’s Capital
You can’t leave the island without going to Mahón, the charming capital of Menorca with a delightful mix of history and modern life. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll discover colorful houses and quaint shops that capture the city’s essence.
Start your exploration at Plaça de s’Esplanada, the main square. Here, you can browse local markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays for unique souvenirs and handmade goods.
Make your way to the picturesque port, one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Take a boat tour to admire the city from the water and learn about its rich maritime history.
Don’t miss the Mercat des Peix, Mahón’s fish market. Open until 2.00 pm (except Sundays and Mondays), it’s a great place to see fresh catches and experience local life. There are also food stalls here, making it a fun place to grab some local eats.
For a cultural fix, visit the Teatro Principal, Spain’s oldest opera house. Built in 1829, it’s a testament to Mahón’s artistic heritage.
As you explore, keep an eye out for traditional bakeries and ice cream shops. El Turronero is a local favorite for sweet treats. Another fun activity is to join a gin tasting at the Xoriguer distillery in Mahon, one of the oldest distilleries in the Mediterranean.
4. Discover the Naveta des Tudons
Did you know that Menorca’s history goes back thousands of years? I certainly didn’t and I was surprised at how many ancient monuments there are on the island.
Get a glimpse of Menorca’s long history with a visit to Naveta des Tudons. This ancient stone structure is said to be Europe’s oldest preserved building, dating back to around 1000 BC.
Located a few kilometers from Ciutadella, it’s easy to reach by car and can be paired with your visit to Ciutadella. Look for the well-marked signs and convenient parking area nearby.
The naveta gets its name from its unique shape, resembling an upside-down boat. It served as a collective tomb for the island’s early inhabitants.
As you approach, you’ll be amazed by its impressive construction. The massive stones fit together without any mortar, showcasing the skill of prehistoric builders. Step inside to explore the burial chamber. Imagine the rituals and ceremonies that took place here thousands of years ago.
The site is open daily, but it’s best to check current hours before you go. Bring a hat and water, as there’s little shade. A small entrance fee helps preserve this important landmark.
5. Walk the Cami de Cavalls
The Cami de Cavalls is a well-known 185-kilometer trail that circles Menorca’s entire coastline. This historic path offers stunning views and a chance to explore the island’s natural beauty.
If you’re the adventurous sort, you can tackle the whole trail in 5-10 days or choose shorter sections for day hikes. The path is split into 20 official stages, but you can easily combine two in a day.
The north coast takes about 5 days to complete, as does the south coast. Each side offers unique landscapes and challenges.
As you walk, you’ll pass beautiful beaches, rugged cliffs, and lush forests. The trail also takes you through charming villages where you can stop for a meal or rest.
But even if you’re not up for a multi-day hike, it’s super easy to do small sections of the Cami de Cavalls as you explore the island – that’s what I did! There are many points along the coast where you can join the trail, visit a beach or two and take in the sea views on a fun day out.
Remember to pack essentials like water, sunscreen, and a hat. The Menorcan sun can be intense, especially in the afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes and bring snacks to keep your energy up.
It’s best to start early in the day to avoid the hottest hours. Take breaks in shaded areas and carry more water than you think you’ll need.
The Cami de Cavalls is well-marked, making it easy to follow. You’ll see wooden posts with the GR 223 sign guiding your way.
6. Explore Menorca’s Coastline by Boat
Seeing Menorca from the water gives you a new view of this beautiful island. Boat trips let you reach hidden coves and beaches that are hard to get to by land.
You can rent a small boat to explore on your own if you’re comfortable sailing. Make sure to get a safety briefing and map of the coastline before setting off.
If you prefer a guided tour, join a group excursion on a larger boat. These usually last 3-6 hours and stop at several scenic spots for swimming and snorkeling. Bring sunscreen, water, and a towel.

7. Fall in Love With Charming Binibeca
I’m probably biased as I stayed in Binibeca on my Menorca trip – but I absolutely love it!
This picturesque spot on Menorca’s southeastern coast will transport you to a world of whitewashed houses and narrow streets.
Take your time exploring Binibeca Vell, the heart of the village. Built in the 1960s in the style of an old-school fisherman village, this area captures the essence of traditional Menorcan design and offers plenty of photo opportunities.
Wander through the winding alleys and admire the charming architecture. The village’s dazzling white buildings create a stunning contrast against the blue sky and sea.
Don’t forget your swimsuit! Binibeca boasts a beautiful beach where you can relax and soak up the sun. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for a refreshing dip. It’s just a short drive or walk from Binibeca Vell.
If you’re up for some fun on the water, join a kayaking excursion where you’ll explore the coastline around Binibeca. Prefer to stay on land? Binibeca is also a great place to walk some of the Cami de Cavalls and visit some of the nearby beaches and coves.
You can also consider renting a bike or scooter to explore the surrounding areas. The coastal roads offer breathtaking views and access to nearby coves and beaches.
For the best experience, visit Binibeca in the morning or late afternoon when the crowds are thinner. This allows you to fully appreciate the village’s tranquil atmosphere.
8. Tour the Formidable Fortress of La Mola
La Mola Fortress stands as one of Europe’s most impressive 19th-century fortifications. You’ll find this architectural marvel on Menorca’s easternmost tip, where it catches Spain’s first rays of sunlight each day.
As you explore, you’ll be amazed by the fortress’s grand design and excellent preservation. The tour takes you through 19 exhibition halls, each telling a piece of Menorca’s rich history from ancient times to the 20th century.
You’ll see old cannons, engineering tools, and original plans of the fortress. Models of other Menorcan fortifications are also on display, giving you a broader view of the island’s defensive structures.
But more than the fortress itself, I personally really loved the natural surroundings which add to the fortress’s appeal. It was so lovely to walk around the area and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.
For an easier tour, you can rent electric buggies on-site. This option is great if you want to cover more ground without tiring yourself out.
To get there, head to the eastern edge of Mahón. The fortress is about a 15-minute drive from the city center. It’s open daily, but check the current hours before you go. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as there’s quite a bit of walking involved.
9. Go Hiking in Menorca
Calling all hiking lovers! Menorca’s stunning landscapes are perfect for hiking enthusiasts like you. The island offers diverse trails that showcase its natural beauty and rich history.
You already know one of the best hikes in Menorca, the Camí de Cavalls, a historic path that circles the entire island. You can tackle sections of it, enjoying coastal views and hidden coves along the way.
For a challenging climb, head to Monte Toro, Menorca’s highest point. The hike rewards you with panoramic views of the island. On a clear day, you might even spot Mallorca!
You also shouldn’t miss Parc Natural S’Albufera des Grau. This protected wetland reserve offers easy walking trails where you can spot diverse bird species and unique plant life. We spent an afternoon walking there, looking out for birds, and enjoying the sunshine – it was a great excursion!
The trail from Santo Tomás to Cala Mitjana is another gem. You’ll walk along dramatic cliffs and through pine forests before reaching beautiful beaches.
The best part about hiking in Menorca is that there’s something for every skill and fitness level and it’s a fantastic activity for the whole family. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. The Mediterranean sun can be intense, so start early and pack sunscreen.

10. Enjoy a Drink at Cova d’en Xoroi
Want a one-of-a-kind experience in Menorca? Go to a place called Cova d’en Xoroi in the town of Cala en Porter. This unique bar is built into the side of a cliff, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
During the day, you can relax and soak in the breathtaking scenery. The entrance fee includes a drink, so you can sip on a cool beverage while enjoying the view.
As evening approaches, Cova d’en Xoroi transforms. It becomes a popular spot to watch the sunset. The sky turns beautiful shades of orange and pink, reflecting off the sea below.
After dark, the cave bar turns into a lively nightclub. You can dance the night away to music from live DJs.
It’s a good idea to arrive early, especially during peak season. This place gets busy, and you’ll want to snag a good spot to enjoy the views. If you’re not the partying kind, I suggest coming in the later afternoon to enjoy the views and the sunset.
The bar is open daily, but hours vary by season. It’s best to check their website for current times. Wear comfortable shoes. There are stairs to climb, and the terrain can be uneven in some areas.
